Background
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are defined as infections occurring up to 30 days after surgery (or up to 90 days after surgery in patients receiving implants) and affecting either the incision or deep tissue at the operation site. (https://www.cdc.gov.hai.ssi)
SSI accounts for 20% of all Healthcare Associated Infections and extends hospital length of stay by 9.7 days. It is associated to a 2- to 11-fold increase in the risk of mortality with 75% of SSI-associated deaths. (Surgical Site Infection Event, National Healthcare Safety Network, January 2023)
Goals
World Health Organization had introduced a standard guideline to provide comprehensive range of evidence-based recommendations as measures to prevent Surgical Site Infection and Hospital Fatimah had adopted these recommendations in order to provide safe and quality care for our customers.

Conclusion
Successful implementation of the Surgical Site Infection Bundle and additional Infection Control Practices including compliance to the ‘5 moments for hand hygiene’, aseptic wound dressing and health education to patients had contributed to zero incidence of Surgical Site Infection in Hospital Fatimah.
