About Me

I retired from government service in April 2020 after 35 years of practice in Ministry of Health hospitals all over Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak.

I graduated from the University of Malaya medical faculty in 1985 and specialised in General Surgery, obtaining the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship [FRCS(E)] in 1990. I further subspecialised in Paediatric Surgery through a government scholarship program from 1994 to 1997 which included 1 year working in Monash Medical Center, Melbourne. I was then sent to Alor Star to set up Paediatric Surgery services for Northern Peninsular Malaysia. I coordinated Paediatric Surgery services for Kedah, Perlis, Penang & Perak from 2000 until my retirement in 2020.

My overall interests are General Paediatric Surgery with a special interest in Paediatric Urology especially Hypospadias surgery.

Information & Updates of Specialty

Paediatric Surgery is a subspecialty of surgery that deals with diseases and illnesses in the newborn, infants and children (up to the age of 12 years) that require surgical consultation, and may require an operation after such a consultation.

It is truly a ‘generalist’ field which includes head and neck surgery, gastrointestinal/abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, paediatric gynaecology, surgical oncology, as well as paediatric urology. Paediatric Surgery does NOT include Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, or Orthopaedic surgery involving children.

Many of the conditions we see (especially in newborns)   are congenital in nature. Some of the more common operations that we do are hernias, hydrocoeles and undescended testes, as well as operations on the penis in boys (including hypospadias repair).

Paediatric surgeons generally rely on Paediatricians and Adult General Surgeons to refer babies and children who require specialised consultation and treatment by them. This is mainly because public awareness of Paediatric Surgery as a separate subspecialty is still lacking. It is hoped that with the establishment of Paediatric Surgical services in Fatimah Hospital, this awareness can be enhanced.
